Tomorrow's Monument

Tomorrow's Monument
Born from the minds of Alex Moya & Kathy Tran
In 2020, a temporary traveling monument was erected as an intervention to connect people to re-imagine and commit to anti-racism.

Monuments honor and remember a version of the past. We are calling for monuments for the future, inviting people to be part of one through an experiential piece. This installation was an outdoors, pop-up arch monument, a 9ft x 10ft x 4ft structure made of fabric onto which we will project animated images and video from different directions. The duration of each intervention was between 2-3 hours in the evening. People were invited to walk through it as a symbolic gesture of commitment to anti-racism. In this way, the arch is also a tunnel, offering participants a journey inside themselves for self-reflection.

Inside the 4ft tunnel, as the audience enters it will trigger a motion sensor to play a video representation of new growth and change. This is to signify audiences emerging from the monument with a changed mindset in how they will exist and interact with their community. This ceremony is an opportunity for people to come together to be a monument for the future, today.
