SOST (Stellenbosch Outdoor Sculpture Trust) is a non-profit organisation that brings contemporary art to a broad audience in Stellenbosch by exhibiting outdoor sculptural exhibitions for free within an urban context. The purpose of this brief was to rebrand the organisation to Stellenbosch Public Art Network (SPAN) and to create an integrated campaign which promotes a more diverse range of public art installations that the organisation has expanded on, which includes sound installations, murals, performance and film.
Expansion through dispersion was my core concept for this project. By using biomimicry, as a strong influence, I was inspired by the Starling murmurations and patterns. The way in which starlings disperse and murmur through space inspired me to establish the dynamic identity. This is represented through the dispersion of the various art pieces throughout Stellenbosch, the movement of people and their evolving perceptions. Starlings are constantly in flight and changing pattern, which reinforces SPANS vision for their ever-changing, expanding and diverse exhibitions.
