Three characters narrate the events of the summer on the island, that just ended:
the son, the father and the grandfather.
The novel's ending, where the reader discovers what happened to the main characters, is written in a comic format. Below, is presented a sample of the final ten pages.
"Είδα την πόλη σας να καίγεται. Είδα τα σπίτια σας να μαυρίζουν. Είδα τα δέντρα σας να γίνονται κάρβουνο και εσάς να τρέχετε μακριά. Πέταξα από θάμνο σε θάμνο, από ελιά σε ρείκι, από χωράφι σε χωράφι, από αυλή σε σπίτι και τα έκαψα όλα".
"I saw your city burning. I saw your houses turning black. I saw your trees turning to charcoal and you running away. I flew from bush to bush, from olive to heather, from field to field, from yard to house and I burned everything ".
"Εκεί κοντά ήταν η πιο ηλικιωμένη ελιά από όλες, το μεγαλύτερο δέντρο του κτήματος, γύρω στα τριακόσια χρόνια ζωής, περήφανη γιαγιά, δέσποζε για να μας καλωσορίζει κάθε φορά που ερχόμασταν στο νησί, αλλά και να μας αποχαιρετάει όταν με βαριά καρδιά αναχωρούσαμε ... Δεν ήθελα να με δει που την παρατούσα έτσι στην πιο δύσκολη στιγμή της."
"Nearby there she was, the oldest olive tree of all, the largest tree on the farm, around three hundred years old, a proud grandmother, dominating the area to welcome us every time we came to the island, but also to say goodbye when we left with a heavy heart .. I did not want her to see me leave her like that, in her most difficult moment."
