Illustrated Letterform
This project began with choosing a typeface, Cubano Regular, which was a very heavy typeface that could be versatile in fitting illustrations inside of the base letter. I illustrated a grouping of cacti morphed into the chosen letterform “C”. The layout worked well because of the irregular shapes that cacti are naturally, so it made it conducive to the curves in the “C”. I also filled in gaps with brightly colored cactus flowers. The flowers added the necessary pop of color and reflected the southwestern vibe to the design. I chose the colors green, yellow, and pink because they were complimentary colors and I wanted to go with a southwestern, but modern aesthetic. The pink and yellow contrasted against the main cactus color green. I transformed the flat design with many layers of gradients to make the shapes look more 3D. I added textures and patterns. A parchment paper texture multiplied on a layer over the cactus created the bumpy, rustic texture.
