Concept Introduction
1980년 5월 말, 광주에는 이전 봄과 다른 바람이 불었습니다. 안타깝지만 그 바람은 칼날처럼 날카로웠습니다. 4000명이 넘는 사람들이 피해를 입었죠. (당시 사망자가 아닌 다른 사람들은 배경의 흰 나비로 표현했습니다.) 165명의 사람들이 일주일 조금 넘는 시간 동안 죽었습니다. 군부 세력에 반대하던 사람부터 그저 집에서 떨고 있던 사람까지도 모두 죽음을 피할 수 없었습니다.
나비는 사람의 죽음과 영혼을 상징한다고 합니다. 저는 이 작품에서 나비들을 통해 이 분들을 그대로 담아내고 싶었습니다. 제 작품이 1980년 5월 광주에서 사라진 이들을 기억하고 추모하는 데 도움이 되길 바랍니다.
사망자의 이름 앞에 있는 번호는 광주지검 검시조서의 명단 번호를 가져온 것입니다. 원본 자료는 아래에서 보실 수 있습니다.
The wind blown at Gwangju in May 1980 was not the spring breeze. It was quite different: sadly, it was cold, piercing wind. It ruined over the 4000 people's life. (These people are expressed as white butterflies on the background.) At that time, 165 people passed away in only one week. All of them couldn't escape from the death: from someone who opposed to the government to someone who stayed inside his/her house. Butterfly symbolizes the death and spirit. I hope my work helps to remember and send condolence to the victims. These butterflies indicate the age, job and injury of each person.
The number in front of each victim’s name is same as the list number from 5.18 victims autopsy report made by Gwangju local prosecutor's office. You can find original reports at here:
