National Cultural Monuments Wayfinding

Exhibition & Signage

Statsbygg owns and manages 15 of Norway's most important cultural monuments - key buildings and properties from different historical periods and architectural styles. As the government's property manager, Statsbygg's goal was to improve accessibility as well as increase awareness of the cultural and architectural significance of the monuments. Tank has been given the task to design unified wayfinding and informational system, which is currently rolled out nationally.

Each cultural monument has gotten a distinctive pictogram featuring its most recognizable characteristics. Together with a muted, nature-inspired color palette and accessible typographic expression, they form the project's visual framework.

Elements of the wayfinding such as text, images, map drawings, and amount of information are carefully planned and allocated so the viewer receives only the most relevant information at the right place.

Working in close collaboration with the client, our goal has been to design a wayfinding system with high aesthetic qualities that is able to function within different architectural and historical contexts. Special attention is given to the relation between the signs and their natural surroundings. Each sign is optimized for maximum accessibility, providing a clear structure and informational hierarchy as well as the best possible visibility and readability. Durability, longevity, and repairability of the signs have been important factors in the choice of materials and production techniques.
