Vulcans Never Bluff

This is a poster promoting a hypothetical Comic Con Q&A panel featuring Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto - both having portrayed the character of Spock from Star Trek. The panel would be focused on the challenges of playing Spock from the perspective of both the original Spock (Nimoy) and the new Spock of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek and Star Trek: Into Darkness (Quinto). I chose to make the artwork multi-layered to reflect the complexity of the character of Spock - a strictly logical half-Vulcan who constantly struggles to repress his emotions - and the vastness of still unexplored space. The layers of the piece also allowed me to utilize my love of hidden imagery and include references to Star Trek. I created a stencil of Nimoy and Quinto out of vellum and airbrushed them onto textured watercolor paper to achieve the feathered edge. I layered schematics of the starship Enterprise (NCC-1701) in Photoshop to add texture to the piece. The "O" in Logic resembles the Star Fleet Science Officer insignia worn by the character. The background of the piece was an experiment with watercolor. I painted cyan and orange swirls to imitate a nebula and meticulously dotted stars with a fine tip black pen. Taking the watercolor into photoshop, I inverted the color changing the cyan to magenta, the orange to blue, and the black stars to white. I layered a watercolor with warmer colors to add depth to the nebula afterward.
