Fun(gi) Beats – Mycelium Speakers

The Fun(gi) Beats – Mycelium Speakers was a piece I made for my ‘Studio Practices in Industrial Design’ course while attending graduate school at UC Davis. The prompt for this assignment was “sustainability in industrial design”.

This set of passive speakers used mycelium to house the electrical components. Mycelium is “the vegetative part of a fungus, consisting of a network of fine white filaments (hyphae)”. The mycelium used was part of a “Grow-It-Yourself” kit from Ecovative Design.
This piece was featured on Ecovative Design’s Instagram.
Full documentation of the build can be found on Instructables.
