"Chester's Windpipes," Digital Materiality

This project was completed as a part of Spatial Dynamics during the spring semester of my foundation year at the Rhode Island School of Design during 2022. The prompt of the project involved responding to some form of music and creating an abstract model from the resulting auditory phenomenon that you wished to consider in your piece. During the course of your modeling experience, you were to take more than 100 screenshots of interesting angles to show the general development of the model over the course of time.

My modeling experiences involved the use of the loft command in multiple ways to try and explore the natural shapes you could create through manipulating the polyline curve tool. I also tried to use simpler commands in an effort to better understand the kinds of commands you need to create models with extensive parts and various textures/explorations of materiality.

The second part of the project involved combining the music you modeled to with the 100 screen captured moments you found while modeling. This part of the process was rather open ended and I decieded to create a movie to capture the general motion of the abstract explorations as I began working. This is coordinated to the beats and general feel of the msuic
These include some of the screencaptures I got after finishing the modeling. All of the included pictures were taken from the perspective viewport with the Artistic display mode, the pen display mode, shaded display mode and the rendered display mode.

I decieded no to assign the different objects to different layers because of their collective appearance as a sort of single, semi-linked form. It feels easier for these developments within the CAD software to be better in conversation with one another instead of separated isolated explorations of form. Each successive development to the piece was informed by other previous creative decisions, and to show this, I decieded to keep all of the different abstracted forms on the same layer.
