Chemigrams

Inspired by the work of Kei Ito with his Burning Away series rooted in his grandfather surviving the Hiroshima bombing, this series of images was made in the same manner using silver gelatin paper, honey, canola oil, and the non-toxic caffenol developing process. In the darkroom, the honey and canola oil were poured onto the paper between increments of light exposure. The paper was then dropped into the caffenol developer (a mix of caffeic acid, sodium carbonate, and vitamin C) and held at an angle for several minutes to create the various streaks seen. The images were then left in a salt bath that resulted in residual salt remaining in various places and consistencies throughout the series.
