Illustrated map of London

Illustrated map of London
This was a fun project worked on for a printed property brochure. The site was in an up-and-coming, popular area of central London with an illustrative brand. It was my job to create a map of London highlighting all the culture and areas on interest in an artistic way. This map was intended to be a statement piece within the brochure and used as a piece of art within the marketing suite.
Stage 1 - get drawing
First I used the good and old-fashioned method of sketching on pen and paper the various icons and unique places central London has to offer. Some of these places were locations of interest like the Shard, London Bridge or Big Ben, whereas others were artistic characteristics of the city like the classic red telephone box or black taxi.
Once sketched, for a rustic look, I scanned the drawings into illustrator and made coloured them in. I did this in illustrator so that any amends to the colours or positions of these elements on the map would be easily made. And, making everything as vectors ensured they would useable across both digital and printed media  at large and small formats.
Stage 2 - throw it all together
In Illustrator, I drew a map of London with a very loose and painted style. Then I added all the hand drawn elements over the top experimenting with layout, form and purpose. Bellow are the three options I drew up for the client, some being more artistic and indicative, others being more informative and accurate.
Stage 3 - Into the real world
The map they chose was then brought into the brochure and the marketing suite artwork. This was printed in a layflat brochure and handed out in the marketing suite for potential buyers to keep and take home with them. It was also printed to be framed on the wall.
Stage 4 - thinking outside the box
Following this initial project, I was asked to make a series of other illustrations which could be used as graphics in the next brochure, social media and other marketing collateral to represent the type of things people at the development would be able to do. I made these in the same process so that their style felt consistent and the graphics would be easily applied across different media.
Thank you for joining me on this illustration journey and I hope you enjoyed it!
