When I was studying abroad in Jerusalem at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design I found a small abandoned building on campus. I painted directly on the crumbling plaster walls and on top of plastic bags and bits of paper that I found in Jerusalem and glued to the wall.
The building is physically a few hundred yards away from one of the many walls Israel built to separate itself from the Palestinians in the West Bank. By painting inside this building I, as an American, am conquering and colonizing a piece of the Holy Land. Of course, the building I'm taking over is on Israeli soil, so by expanding American territory I have taken land from Israel, just as the ancient Romans took land from the Jews, how the Israelis took land from the Palestinians, and so on.
