Acrylic Paint, Brushes, Paper.
A3

A hero in Montréal, a goalie for the Canadiens, this was my first attempt at a portrait using acrylic paints & following it through to the finish piece. I think I learned a lot painting this, there is a time commitment required to really build up the image & bring it to life. I left it at this point, not wanting work it any further & I left a few of the mistakes that I could fix. The point of this was exploration & discovery, could I do it? Could it be accurate, could I create a convincing background, would it work as a unified piece? I built up layers of acrylics & utilized my palette knives to give some texture to the background. I think I was able to create a sense of depth in the background with a mixture of thin blues & mustard colours, glazing them on in some areas. I used some gold metallic paint to add some highlights to his mask. It has a vintage look to it & I think that adds to the appeal. The background’s mix of colours create a cool space, invoking the cold environment of the ice hockey arena, & before the boards were plastered with advertisements. Overall, there is a nice old time sense to the image & I a happy with the result because it gives me a starting point or baseline for future works.
