Untitled Self Portrait, Personal Failings Through Bodily Restraint
Performance with Photo Documentation and Residual Drawing.
Bungee cords, Dowel sticks, Charcoal, Gesso and Water.
When identifying my own personal failings I noticed that with out realizing it I tend to set up obstacles for my self, unnecessary challenges that hinder my ability to deal with the task at hand. So for this piece I set up obstacles that would hinder my ability to draw my self portrait. I set up two six foot dowel rods with charcoal on one and a paint brush on the other and attached a bungee cord to the wall that I then stepped inside and had to pull against to reach the charcoal poles to the paper on the opposite wall.

In our contemporary culture the lines of gender are often unclear, leading us to immediately label figures as masculine or feminine, male or female, or man or woman. In my most recent work, Male, Female. Female, Male., I attempt to explore the notion of gender simply as a construct of our society, removed from the anatomy of an individuals sex. Displaying two figures, anatomically female, by creating a scene devoid of any identifiers of gender I attempt to leave the viewer in the dark in regards to the figures gender.

Unsupported Weight
Found chair back, wood, fabric, and upholstery foam.
Performance enacted by a person wishing to be seated and the artist. The chair is unable to withstand and support the weight of the person wishing to be seated with out another person (the artist) holding the handles upwards parallel to the ground.
