Black Girl Gamers - branding and campaign

Diversifying gaming
Branding + Graphic Campaign
I took part in the DandAD new blood awards 2022 in the form of a visual identity and graphic led campaign for “Black Girl Gamers”. They are a community driven business that is centred around bringing together black female content creators within the gaming space. Their main objective is to change the current narrative within the gaming society and to encourage their demographic to get involved with gaming. The business was first set up as a group of like-minded friends in 2015 which then developed into a “thriving collective” of over 7000 black women.
The visual identity started with a refresh of their logo. The design was based on their want for a professional tone as they look to work with large organisations and something that sets themselves apart from the “macho” norms of gaming identities. I wanted to really draw on the power of black femininity with the typefaces whilst keeping a friendly feel. The sans being the strength and power for the movement they were creating and the serif being the elegance.

The “Good Game” campaign was conceptualised from the initials of the brand and the commonly used phrase of “GG” within the gaming community. The term being used as a sign of respect towards fellow players when a game is completed. The campaign looks to put emphasis on lack of diversity within gaming by questioning the use of the phrase. Stylistically I wanted to follow the avoidance of gaming tropes through the use of emotive typography. The campaign looks to directly target the industry with the use of posters at gaming events and social media posts.
“Stylistically I wanted the campaign to flip the branding on it's head and demonstrate how serious this issue is within gaming"
