Map Illustration
I have never been to Antarctica and will probably never go there in my life. But I am impressed by the icy landscape of the southernmost continent and by the animals that live there, all specialized for a life in this icy world.
Based on a map of Antarctica, that I found in an atlas from my school days, I designed a simplified shape of the continent.
To give the continent a random texture, I take a detour to the analogue and apply a technique I learned from the German edition of Von Glitschka's book »Vector Basic Training«. For that I edit a completely black laser printout using various tools and finally crumple the paper to remove the toner in random places. Afterwards I scan the crumpled piece of paper and invert the digital image. After converting the image to vectors, I color the created structures and lay them over the land area, reducing the opacity.
I also use analog tools to add a silkscreen print effect to my vector artwork. With black acrylic paint, brush, paint roller and kitchen sieve I create textures from which I design my own patterns.
Thanks for watching!
