Wonderful Wizard of OZ

Design a book cover of your choice.

My Concept
Though I had never read the Wonderful Wizard of OZ, I knew the story very well. Having grown up watching the movie and singing along to its soundtrack I knew I wanted to design it’s book cover.

Coming into this project I knew it would be a challenge because the story already had an identity. By brainstorming various themes, I came up with the concept of the tornado and the yellow brick road. I discovered that by playing with their shapes one could become the other. As the story plays out, Dorothy’s journey starts in Kansas during a tornado and ends in the Emerald City. The play of mirroring the shape of the tornado on the front to become the yellow brick road on the back represents that journey. The green represents the Emerald City and the pink is the field of poppy’s described in the story.
