JULIE ARCHIBALD, NURSE PRACTITIONER
ABOUT ME
I began my nursing career 7 years ago and quickly developed a particular interest in care of the geriatric patient. I decided to purse an advanced degree in this field 3 years ago with the desire to provide comprehensive, high-level evidence-based care to the geriatric population. I am excited to have the opportunity to pursue new opportunities in my career with my AGNP degree, and will continue to practice nursing while always remembering what matters most to my patients.

Capstone Systematic Review: Use of Assessment Tools to Identify Potentially Inappropriate Medications in Older Adults & Impact on Adverse Drug Events
Abstract
Purpose: Assessment tools such as the Beers list and STOPP/START criteria have been created to assist patients and healthcare providers in identifying potentially inappropriate medication in older adults. The aim of this systematic review of the literature is to ascertain whether the use of these assessment tools is effective in preventing adverse drug events.
Methods: Research articles related to the chosen topic were found using the CINAHL, Ovid, and PubMed databases. A literature review was conducted.
Results: A statistically significant association between potentially inappropriate medications identified by the Beers list and STOPP/START criteria and adverse drug events was supported by the research.
Conclusion: Advanced practice nurses should familiarize themselves with the Beers list and STOPP/START criteria to help prevent adverse drug events cause by potentially inappropriate medications in their older adult patients.
