The Redux challenge was meant for the viewer to identify an object through minimal parts while still getting the point across as to what the object is. Through a series of photographs and digital illustration, objects were closely identified and dissected by their parts; taking a look at their highlights and shadows to further the process of creating a digital reduction. Lines were closely looked at that were most important to fill the object in discerning what it was. Furthermore, cohesive coloring was taken into consideration to match the aesthetic of what category the objects fit into. Most importantly, a minimalist approach was taken to solve the challenge of a visual reduction.
Photographs were first taken that showed a variety of highlights and shadows that would make the reduction process easier. Different angles were taken that showed some of the objects different approaches.
Drawings were made focusing more on the highlights and shadows from the photographs. From pencil sketching, pen sketches were made as well in order to reduce the process even more.
Sketches were brought to Illustrator to show cleaner lines. Both the pen and shape tool were utilized to see how objects would translate through those two tools. Another challenge was making sure the object was displayed well through highlights and shadows.
The chosen color palette consisted of a retro theme, as most the objects photographed would be items found in households over previous decades. Shades and tints were utilized as well to give the objects some contrast and to properly show highlights within the final lockups.
Using the color palette; it was applied to the objects paired with their words that best described the objects. Experimenting with coloring made the process easier in selecting the most successful pairs.
Through a process of much feedback, the final three pairs are pictured here that best displayed a minimalist and retro approach to the objects. Bold lettering brought out each object through its line weight as well as coloring paired with each background and object.
