The redux project explored figure ground relationships with a final composition that created a simple visual representation of an everyday tool that could be used as in-store signage. The tools chosen were to be simplified while establishing a strong composition alongside its descriptive typography.
Process Photographs
Pencil Sketches
This project began by taking black and white photographs of three different tools in a variety of placements and the use of strong lighting. The images were to show a strong definition of the objects form and the contrast in values. After taking multiple pictures, I then chose the top three images that effectively showed contrast in values for each tool. To further explore contrasting values, I created pencil sketches of each to thoroughly see the natural shadows and reflection.
Early Black and White Icon Digital Iterations
I then created various black and white iterations of the objects in their simplest forms in Adobe Illustrator. This required me to keep the most essential parts of the object and reducing it by taking out unnecessary details that would not affect its legibility and form.
Color Application
I then chose the best iterations for each object and began to explore color, text, and object composition. The colors chosen were based on a shoppers experience and how they would appeal to them when shopping in a store and where the tool could be found. I decided on a color scheme of four neutral colors with two blues, a yellow, and brown. The text used is a descriptive word that matches the function of the tool and the font used for the final composition is Rockwell Bold. It was also important to explore many iterations for the text and tool composition in order to show a cohesive relationship while also paying attention to the use of negative and positive.
