Griffon Characterization

Abstract
For this project, I was required to illustrate my interpretation of the Griffon, a mythical creature mentioned in, 'The Book of Imaginary Beings' by Jorge Luis Borges. The Griffon has had numerous representations in many different cultures all over the world, symbolizing different values of that particular culture, especially in the medieval ages.
I chose to focus on Dante's version of the Griffon mentioned in his 'Divine Comedy' as it emerges from the Purgatory dragging a chariot along as it flies. Many scholars believe that the chariot is a representation of the Church. Being a union of an aerial bird and a terrestrial beast, it was seen in Christendom to be a symbol of Jesus, who was both human and divine. As such it can be found sculpted on some churches.
