Diaspora: Beauty of marginalized Women

Exhibit wall
The Phillips Collection is a modern art museum located in DuPont Circle, Washington, DC. established by art collector and philanthropist Duncan Phillips. "As a collector, Duncan Phillips was noted for his willingness to deviate from the art museum standard of displaying works together based on shared nationality and geography, interpreting modernism as a dialogue between past and present." (The Phillips Museum)

Objective: The European beauty standard has impacted the way women of color are treated, especially in cases of assault. My goal for this project was to illustrate the beauty of women of color based on their shared nationality and geography to a
predominantly Caucasian audience, to educate the importance of protection for black, brown and indigenous women defined by their own beauty standards and what their beauty standards mean to them.

Solution: Illustrate the beauty of women from different diaspora by highlighting standout attributes: hair, clothes, make-up styles etc. that make them beautiful.
The color palette of this project is reminiscent of warm neutral colors found in nature and illustrates the natural and creative way women of color present their beauty. The san-serif typeface Ubuntu is the secondary type, used for the captions and quotes of the book, poster and exhibit wall because of it's humanist quality, while the serif typeface Essonnes, used as the primary typeface for chapter titles and in the motion graphic are used to exhibit grace, poise and regality of beauty expressed by the diaspora or women.
