Discovery Channel Rebrand

In this project I will be delivering a set of animations namely Idents, Schedule filler, tickertape and a 1 page mobile UI to accompany the total Rebrand of some of TV’s greatest known channels such as Discovery, Food Network, Travel Channel and the ID channel. In my Rebrand of the Discovery channel I have to stay focused on the consistency of the content across the range of deliverables such as colour, content, typography, animations etc so that the message of the brand to my audience doesn’t go off track and make people confused. I did a lot of research regarding the typeface which I chose and went through a process of elimination to see which one fits my brand. I chose the century gothic typeface because of the bold statement that it makes and the geometric shapes which I could put my own spin on. I was very aware and careful with the kerning and placement of the letters so that when looked at they all flow and work together and that something doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb. This project was largely based around animations so after effects was one of the programmes which came in need for the creation of our deliverables so careful consideration had to be thought out in terms of the time needed for each sting but more importantly for each piece of text and layer animation!
During the course of the construction of my new brand I had to think about how everything could tie in together and stay consistent across a range of media. To do this I had to push the limits of a traditional logo and make it in a way, timeless and re-usable. Therefore I decided to create a Polymorphic logo which essentially means that it can change into quite a lot of things. This was made possible by the absence of the letter O in my logo and was replaced with an underscore which implies that there is a gap to be filled. Through careful consideration I based my concept off of the beauty in the small things around you or the things at hand which are next to you and what you could do to and with these items to be able to create some amazing, awesome and beautiful artworks/video footage. So yes the icons which I created were predominantly based off of a circular shape to fit the appearance of the letter O, not saying that every icon/image has to be circular but can still be enhanced and changed into different shapes so that when people look at it and that they can see what the icon represents. This was a huge success in terms of having to create icons/imagery to fill that gap for future content on the Discovery Channel! I wanted to bring the message across to the audience by leaving them with a message saying “You Choose” which is implying that even though every person regardless of your position/degree/job can look at something around them and find the beauty in that thing, could be using your phone to zoom in on the watch on your hand? Could be the texture of your scarf or the reflection of your phone which captures a specific colour or light. Those are just a few examples but yes, ultimately that’s what I did, I used the items which were present around me to create beautiful videography and get some pretty awesome shots. I wanted to try something new, something that people haven’t seen or thought of before and putting the ball in their court and giving them the opportunity to choose what they would like to see fill that gap in the discovery logo and have exciting content or adverts based off of that!
