The Burden of a King

Personal project from a book I'm writing

It's not easy to be rightful in a world where everything is wrong. Aslan de Agnes Gaillard became the king of the Ellan Kingdom by the tyrannous act of killing his own father, the previous king who abused and betrayed the will of his people. The "burden of a ruler" that Aslan carries might as well be called the "hope of the people", for a true king must live for his people, not the other way around.
It was as if he had to climb the stairs he couldn't see the end of.

The stairs that seemed like a few steps from far away now looked as tall as the highest mountain, and its height kept increasing no matter how much of it he climbed.

The steps he took burned behind him with the flames of rage, and the only way he could go was up.

The drops of blood falling from his sword painted the blank path he walked with the color of his sin.

The crown he wore felt immensely heavy, but he held his head high anyway.

Because he was the only one who could stand in that place without falling.

"Long live King Aslan!"

A requiem was played amongst the cheers of his people as he stepped over the blood of his kin and many others.

Cries of joy could be heard from afar, but the cries of the people who died by his hands loud and vividly played on repeat inside his head.

He kept climbing those stairs nebertheless, not knowing where they would lead him—or if they ever would stop appearing.

Because that was the burden he carried as a king.
