“Cubism” - Advertising Poster for College

College Assignment - Advertising posters for the TATE Galleries

For our assignment at college, we were tasked to create four posters designed to advertise fictional exhibitions centred on an art movement of our choice. We were free to style the posters as we chose but our design had to include the mark making techniques we had learned prior to the project.

I chose to centre my poster designs on the theme of four distinct art movements. These were Impressionism, Cubism, Op Art and DaDa.

For my Cubism poster, I based my style on the theme of geometric shapes. For my background, I constructed a montage of various polygon shapes to form a “stained glass” pattern reminiscent of the shape based artwork of the time. For my chosen artworks, I used a combination of paintings by Picasso and Braque. However as opposed to filling the whole space, I arranged the works in small boxes to keep their presence balanced. I chose this not only to highlight the background but also, taking into account the harsh contrasting colours, I felt this design provided more balance when providing space for the accompanying text. I also continued the geometric theme through my use of a rectangular based font placed inside a box for the Cubism title.
