We all know the legend of Icarus, whose father Daedalus built wings of feathers and wax for himself and his son to escape from the captivity of Minos on Crete. The son Icarus became overconfident, the wax melted and he fell into the sea. Despite his father’s warnings.

Again, the parallels: Despite warnings and admonitions, we spiral into ever higher and warmer and warmer climes, and the crash is not far away.
Okay, maybe that’s a bit drastic and striking. But true.

Here are photographed specimens of animals, most of whose species are extinct. For this series the Senckenberg Naturhistorische Sammlungen Dresden and the Leica Camera AG supported me very dedicated in my work. Thank you.

Cuban red macaw (Ara tricolor) - extict 1885
Passenger pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius) - last shot 1900
Taliabu masked owl (Tyto nigrobrunnea) - highly endangered, leading some experts to doubt its continued existence.
Great auk (Alca impennis) - extinct 1852
Huia  (Heteralocha acutirostris) - extict 1907
Pied raven (Corvus corax varius morpha leucophaeus) - extinct 1902
South Island takahē (Porphyrio hochstetteri) - nationally vulnerable, population 440 (2021)
Kakapo (Strigops habroptilus) - crtically endangered
Kiwi (Apteryx) - vulnerable
Waldrapp (Geronticus eremita) - endangered, extinct in Europe 1645
Auckland merganser or Auckland Islands merganser (Mergus australis) - presumably extinct 1902
