Speechmask - Speak any language in the world

In the current CORONA-crisis and the CORONA-semester we thought about how to make the daily life of certain people easier. After extensive considerations, we came to the decision to design and develop a mouth guard mask with translation function.

With the SpeechMask not only the safety of the wearer and his fellow men is guaranteed, but also the original, personal communication is made possible again. By wearing a mouthguard, we practically disguise half of our face, including mouth, nose and cheeks. All important body parts for communicating facial expressions and emotions. Accordingly, the SpeechMask is made of a transparent plastic, which, unlike conventional cloth masks, does not cover any of the above-mentioned body parts, allowing for unveiled communication. Compared to other translation masks that have appeared on the market in recent days and weeks and only function with text output on the smartphone, our mask has a powerful microphone built in, which picks up a spoken sentence and sends it to a microcontroller, the Raspberry Pi, which then translates the spoken word and passes it on to a speaker built into the mask, which clearly outputs the translated sentence. The Raspberry Pi is a single-board computer, contains a single-chip system, and is the size of a credit card. The computer, which is very simple compared to common personal computers, was developed with the aim of making it easier for young people to acquire programming and hardware skills.

The mask can be used wherever there is communication between two people who speak different languages. Whether tourists, businessmen, or even rescue workers in third world countries... everyone could be protected by the SpeechMask as well as become a person who speaks hundreds of languages!
