Flora Eats Fauna Book

FLORA EATS FAUNA
I created a book about carnivorous plants to dispel myths about them and to provide a care guide through cute illustrations and colorful photos.
Book mockup from freepik.com.
Concept Sketches
I started by creating the logo. I wanted to incorporate a Venus flytrap in a simple, cute way, as well as illustrate the "eating" part of Flora Eats Fauna. While I liked the idea of the flytrap's "mouth" open around the title, I wanted the illustration to be more cute and friendly to subvert most people's ideas about carnivorous plants being monsters. After deciding on the bottom right as the logo, I sketched a storyboard using the character throughout the book.
Logo Creation
My first version of the logo used a thick script font for both the words "flora" and "fauna". In the final version, I used a script font for "flora" and a slab serif font for "fauna" to distinguish them. I also decided to use a color palette inspired by a pitcher plant.
The Content
I created illustrations of the Venus flytrap character to accompany the content of the pages, making sure to keep it cute and expressive. I used the same illustration style to show other types of carnivorous plants and plant pots. I accompanied the illustration with photos in round, bubble-like frames.
Product Tie-In
I put the logo on a plant pot mockup from zippypixels.com as a tie-in promotional product for the book, hoping that the book will convince those who are wary of carnivorous plants to give them a try.
