The social issue I decided to cover was, with the recent death of the Queen, the moral issues within the Monarchy and Royal Family. My research led me to two sides of every story. This first mockup I have representing the sweet, tender old lady we all know and love so I kept the colors light and monochromatic and placed it in an elegant, clean setting.
Here I have the side by side of the issue. With such heavy text I decided to keep the center of the page mostly empty and stick to one column. I also added the flower design to the bottom left photo to tie in with the first spread.
This is the bad side of the Monarchy being represented, including history and recent scandals of racism. I have the picture of the Queen in black and white to give a ghostly, almost evil, appearance.
Here are the front and back covers. I thought it was interesting to have such a drastic shift in color and mood between the front and back, representing the two sides I was arguing. I also wanted the cover to be very simple, so I gave no detail to the face, expressing how recognizable the queen is.
My process started with filler text and just making sure everything looked alright compositionally and there were multiple levels of hierarchy. I went back and simplified things to add more white space. From there it was mostly margins, spell check, and making sure the font and font sizes were all consistant.
The poster for this project was formal, index, and one could argue combination as well. The crown is representing the Monarchy and the blood pouring down is from the slaves walking across the top. It's saying how this powerful country is built upon a history of colonization.
The process started out as a sketch. I moved to adobe illustrator to create the shapes. With the crown already being symmetrical, I had the blood dripping down be slightly different on each side for some extra interest and to balance the poster.
