What If Sound has a Shape?

What If Sound has a Shape?
What if Sound has a Shape? is a 2-weeks residential project of EUNIC in which Thai students will have an opportunity to be paired with EU students from 6 countries to create a collaboration project through the concept of "Exchange Rate" and exhibited our works at Gallery Oasis on 7-9th October, 2022. For me, I got to paired up with Italian musician, Rosa Evangelista who is specializing in music instrument called Bassoon. Throughout our 2 weeks of residential project, me and Rosa got to exchange our perspective and impressions towards our Bangkok sightseeing trip. Therefore, these impressions and perspectives were interpreted into visuals and sounds, combining together to made up our installation art.
As mentioned that we went for a sightseeing of Bangkok, for me as a local people as I was born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand made my impressions and experiences towards places in Bangkok differentiate from Rosa, who was coming to Bangkok and Southeast Asian countries for the very first time. I took her to different aspects of Bangkok like temples, city, or different kind of transportation Bangkokians use in their daily life. I took some photos of the places while Rosa capture the soundscape of different places. Then after sightseeing trip, we went back and discuss about our thoughts and impressions about the trip so that we could interpreted them into visuals and sound designs.
As for my part I working on the visuals, I started my part by transformed the taken photos of Bangkok place into different colors. As me and Rosa found that Bangkok is the place that have variation of atmosphere therefore, we differentiate the atmosphere into 3 visual. From pictures above, I was transform the photos into colors and create a motion line using photo editing effects to symbolize the musical bar. Then I created another of visual which represented by the dots and we discuss and agree that different sounds, tempos and rhythms can be compared to the circle dots that have variation of size and color. So, I created another dotted visual using halftone effects and print them as transparency layers.
Halftone layer scene 1: Cityscape
Halftone layer scene 2: Templescape
Halftone layer scene 3: Riverscape
After we have printed all the visuals and created the sound designs. We setup our installation using the musical stands into 3 stations. Each station would have different soundscape and visual in order to express different atmosphere of Bangkok. In each station we would also connected the musical stand with the music player and headphone so that the audience can be immersed into an atmosphere as they look and listen through our pieces.
