bird in the shell
Following design proposal aims to provide a sustainable ecosystem for humans, birds and plants in general concept and enhance the overall fauna by using sustainable and low carbon footprint materials. The light and permeable structure made from recycled scrap steel creates a contrast between the crane’s dominant and heavy structure.
FAQ
Where do we see ourselves in the food chain?
Can we design our cities and future only considering our kind?
How fair is it to design for other species?
Can we co-exist with other living species?
If so, how?
How sustainable is this design proposal?
Do we create equal living for them too?
Bird watching, which is also seen in our society, dates back to ancient times and is even rumored to date back to the conquest of Istanbul. In the years when Istanbul was first conquered, the fact that it was on the bird migration routes attracted the attention of the palace and an observation team was formed for this. In the societies formed in and around the Golden Horn, a tally of birds flying is made and archived. Again, birdhouses, which we often encounter in Ottoman architecture, are proof of how much our society is actually related to birds. One of the biggest goals of this project is to revive this observation feature
and tradition, which has been lost in time, in the city’s memory.
these birds are selected as the target profile as the bird nest users.
each of the birds have different dimensions and the target nest was going to be shaped according to the sizes of these users.
each material was chosen according to acquire the desired transperent, light and permeable, sustainable and low carbon footprint design
Modules of Co-Living were attached to the main structure
to access the main spaces you can follow two paths:
one is the main elevator and the second one is the experimental stairs showing Istanbul from different perspectives(the sea relation can be experienced in each stair while accessing other levels of the structure)
the orange pigmented micro cement allows the stair users to famialarize with the route of the stairs and provides a continuous flow in the structure without restrictions.
exhibition is following the same design principle and similar structure profiles
the adjustable plugs allow different exhibition styles
consisting of archieve and cafe spaces in the cantilevered zone allows its users to examine the books and get more knowledge about the ornithology with its working spaces too.
amazing view of Bosphorus and the terraces allows its users to experience Istanbul in an urban context
the sea stone bar creates a focal point in the space by its textures
the terrace allows all kinds of users to access and experience the beautiful landscape with the wind, sun, bird sounds, ship sounds and more!
studio and workshop space is home to many activies such as ornithology seminars, workshops, sculpture artists workshops and more by its flexible furniture layout

the living spaces on the top floor consisting of one shared kitchen is the most private space in the structure to provide its users some privacy
The usage of OSB on wall panels and microcement on floor creates a warm, sustainable and cozy environment
our two gigantic section perspectives!
with the rising tempratures bigger groups are estimated in Istanbul and to provide better and comfortable resting, nesting zones for birds these nests can be increased according to the demands and needs
