Seven Creative Strategies in Photoshop

Seven Creative Strategies in Photoshop
ART 235 Project 1 was assigned to create a serie of seven images using the same object and the seven strategies: combination, juxtaposition, isolation, metaphor, change of context, physical, and material change. The object that I decided to use was a donut and each day we had to take photos of the same object or find images. In my case, I downloaded them because I wanted my photos to have good light.
Category: COMBINATIONS, Title: “Sweetness time” Combining unrelated objects such as alarm clock and donut to build a new object.
To make this image about combination was so difficult because I misunderstood, but by doing better research in which I decided to combine alam clock and donut to create a new object where I used different layers for each image and shadow on Photoshop.
Category: JUXTAPOSITION, Title: “Party calories", The concept of weight was used with a weight machine and donut to place close together with contrasting effect.
I had to look for many different weight machines to find the best to use with my donut and I made many visual experiments to create the best layout. I made different layers in Photoshop and use a stoke path for the shadow of the panel to make profundity.
Category: ISOLATION, Title: “The bitten”, Repeating the same object and using one different to contrast the elements to focus on it and isolate it at the same time.
In the beginning, the background did not match with the idea because it was pink and I had to change it to a dark blue to link with the idea of a vampire donut. Also, I added strawberry jam to look like blood.
Category: METAPHOR/SIMILE, Title: “Heavenly taste”, Emphasizing the idea of the donut flavor and the heaven to symbolize that donuts are made for Heaven because their flavor is delicious.
This image was created by using three different elements the background (sky), the wings, and the donuts. I had to change the wings for a white color to link with angels and I used a glazed donut. Also, I refined the edges of the wings to blur the mask made.
Category: CHANGE OF CONTEXT OR ENVIRONMENT, Title: “Red velvet night”, I used a red velvet donut instead of a red moon.

To make this image I had to find different moons and some scenes to match my idea for the red velvet flavor. The adjustments were with the moon and with the trees to match them.
Category: PHYSICAL SHAPE SIMILARITY, Title: “Game over”, Finding physical similarities between Pacman and the bitten donuts to design a new Pacman.
By doing this image, I made three different visual experiments. One was with a completely yellow donut without the bitten and created Pacman mouth with a triangle. The second try was with a background of the game, and the last was with a bitten donut glazed.
Category: MATERIAL CHANGE, SWAP, OR FOCUS, Title: “Berry fresh”, Changing the strawberry for a donut to create an idea of freshness.

This image had many challenges because, on the first try, I used a strawberry with a donut texture, but it did not work well. Finally, I made different layers one is for the strawberry texture, donut, pedicel, and shadow, and the last layer is for the transparency of the donut texture. The shadow was changed twice because the first was gray and the image look dirty and the second was blurred with more detail, in consequence, it looks like a shadow.
Creative Process
Mind Mapping
Mind Mapping, Finding concepts, objects, and elements in which I could apply seven creative strategies.
Creating a mind map to use for this project helped me to extract principal ideas and information for my sketches.
Sketches
30 Concept Thumbnail Sketches using seven creative strategies with a donut.
Brainstorming helped me to identify objects and concepts to organize my ideas to make my sketches with more clarity and it is important to use notes on your sketches to know what are the elements used on them.
Visual Research
Visual Audit of Creative Strategies
The research will help me in the future because making it is the best way to find ideas for good designers. Nowadays, I have many resources available to find good projects or find articles to improve my designs.
Visual Experiments
Visual Experiments by Using Photoshop.
Making visual experiments is a good process when you shall have a client because you can show them options to choose.
Final Images
Making this project took me 3 weeks working from Monday-Friday, 3-4 hours per day.
