Fifty years ago, the grand synagogues of Kolkata echoed with the prayers and laughter of a bustling and thriving Jewish community. But now, only a handful of Jews remain and their once lively presence in the city's houses of worship is gone. Yet, despite this emptiness, the legacy of the Jewish community endures, as multiple generations of Muslim families step forward to tend and preserve these beautiful architectural treasures. These photos offer a glimpse into the stunning beauty of these synagogues and tell the moving story of the Jewish community's journey in Calcutta.
