Designing for Resilience in Afghanistan:
Creating the ABADEI Logo
Area Based Approach for Development Emergency Initiatives (ABADEI)
The ABADEI initiative is a critical program aimed at sustaining essential services and addressing basic human needs for the people of Afghanistan. As a designer, I was tasked with creating a logo that visually represents the initiative’s core values and objectives. I started by exploring the ABADEI name itself, which means “communities being resilient and inspirations for a better future” in Pashto and Dari. This concept of resilience informed the design elements that I chose for the logo.

The logo features a hand shape to represent the program’s supportive aspect. The hand symbolizes the help that ABADEI provides to the people of Afghanistan, enabling them to earn a living with dignity and without displacement. The map location pin shape, with its circle inside, represents the “area-based” nature of the initiative and the emergency situations it addresses. The top bar lines represent growth and development, reinforcing the idea of resilience and a better future.

My design for the ABADEI logo is a visual representation of the program’s mission to bring together UNDP, UN agencies, and nongovernmental organizations to provide community-level solutions that complement the urgent humanitarian interventions in Afghanistan. I am proud to have played a role in the UNDP’s prioritization towards community resilience in the country through my work on the ABADEI logo.
Thank you!
