Fight Generation

Project: Fight Generation Martial Arts Gym

Brief: research on an existing space and create a new physical and psychological experience

Client: Fight Generation

Location: 41C North Canal Road

The newly proposed design for Fight G was heavily influenced from the lack of the feel that is existing within local Muay Thai gyms. In Thailand, traditional Muay Thai camps were built mainly out of plaster, timber, bamboo and aluminium.

The way that such training camps have been built is to allow the trainees to focus purely on their training without any distractions, blending them as one with nature, to harden both mind and bodies for the intensity of a fight.

To replicate the foundation of such camps, namely Por Pramuk Muay Thai Camp located in Thailand, the very same materials have been incorporated. Three different levels of the gym depicts the three different stages of ascension from a trainee to a fighter.
3rd Floor of shophouse
(Reception, exhibition and locker areas)

The 3rd Floor has been divided into 4 sections - namely the Reception Area, Meeting Area, Galleries, and the Locker Area.

A warm color scheme welcomes visitors to the gym and a similar form of lighting adds a touch of grittyness and specifies the discipline of the fighting culture involved, subtly stating the place's purpose.

4th Floor of shophouse
(Training and weightlifting areas)

Level 4 provides the main training ground of the whole gym - it is here where old school and modernized training meets and fuses together into one disciplined and effective fighting style. There are four sections to this level - Gym, Grass Patch, Bags Area, and Main Training Area.

The selection of materials leans towards the cold, unfeeling side of training - rough hewn metal, simulated grass, concrete and a harsher form of lighting, for both illumination and intensity.

Roof level of shophouse
(Competition areas)

The final level of the gym allows its users to prepare and engage in sparring or official matches. The lighting and design scheme is formed in reference to an initiation ceremony, where one will prove his worth.

There is also a room for preparation for the fighters, as well as smaller rings for close range practice. A members' lounge is situated at the rear for cohesion and relaxation purposes, basically a social spot for all.
