VU ARCHITECTURAL EMBELLISHMENT from 1873 to Present

ORNAMENTATION ON VANDERBILT CAMPUS :
a typological exploration from 1873 to present
I intend to explore ornamentation styles throughout the ages of Vanderbilt’s campus, starting with their first women’s dorm, the Vaughn home. With each embellishment, I analyze composition and shape, stroke, dimensionality and repetition.
ornamentation patterns featured on the exterior of the Vaughn home, established in the 1880s
Pop art developed in direct opposition to 'traditional' art forms in the 1950s and 1960s. As women in the Vaughn home sought intellectual freedom through breaking out of norms and transcending predisposed ideals of learning, they, too, rebelled against tradition. This exploration of the Vaughn home's architectural ornamentation as pop art is intended to express the forward-thinking, eclectic nature of the women of this house, who prospered within the confines of restriction and tradition.
Through this typology vector design, I investigate ornamentation in architecture across Vanderbilt University’s campus. Established in 1873, Vanderbilt’s campus is home to a plethora of architectural ornamentation, much of which has transformed as the school's culture and infrastructure has modernized.
