Applique and Quilting Samples

These samples were a part of my embellishment class where I practiced hand and machine applique techniques, as well as quilting techniques.

The first sample is a 3ftx3ft of black fabric with an vine-inspired design appliqued on. I first drew the design, cut out the pattern in a single, continuous piece, cut notches into the seam allowance, pressed it in, and hand basted the vines onto the black fabric below. I then machine stitched it to attach it permanently.

The second design was inspired by the fabric below; it reminded me of an 1920's art deco aesthetic, so I decided to create a design of cascading diamonds that represent an age of opulence. The diamonds were hand painted onto the fabric before being machine stitched to the purple and black fabric below. I plan to redo this idea using Columbia College's fabric printer to make the diamonds so they have more crisp and consistent lines, and attach the appliques to a flapper-esk dress.

The other samples are for practice and to understand the techniques so they can be used for future designs.
