I was given an assignment to portray an emotion or feeling through my art. I decided to capture the feeling of jealousy and using symbolism in my design process. I first started with some sketches of images that first came to mind.
I know I wanted to use the color green to represent envy, and use red for anger. After discussing it with my advisor, we felt that the heart with green flames would best capture the vision I was going for.
I created multiple outlines of the heart I was going to create so that I could test the materials I wanted to use for the flames. Since I decided to use color pencil and marker for the heart, I needed to find something that would work to go over the top of it. I originally tried to use color pencil for the flames but it wasn't giving me the glow I was looking for. I found that using paint and pastels created the glowing affect that I wanted.
Once I was finished with composing the heart itself and the flames wrapping around it, I wanted to add more elements that brought my message across. I added smoke to the flames to add more dimension, and then I decided to burn the edges of my piece with a lighter. I like what the burnt edges adds to my work. It gives the audience the feeling that the heart is being constricted, the same feeling a person gets when they experience jealousy.
