The Great Gatsby Book Cover Redesign

The Great Gatsby
Book Cover Redesign
by Lauren Booth
For this project, I created two different book cover editions of the novel "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald. For the paperback edition, I explored a fun illustration style that was a more affordable option, using a bold color palette and modern title font. The hardcover is a luxurious design with a leather cover and gold leaf deboss with an ornate Art Nouveau linework design.
Paperback:
The front and back cover designs. I demonstrated Gatsby's house on the front cover with one of his famous parties going on with people dancing. The back cover uses a 1920s art deco style with a description of the book. I enjoyed using Adobe Illustrator to create this illustration!
For the interior layout of the paperback design I used the same font as the title on the cover as the chapter titles. I used a legible, yet modern serif font for the body text of the book.
Hardcover:
The hardcover design is linework in an Art Nouveau style that characterized the 1920's. To convey a sense of luxury, I created an ornate linework design texturized to look like gold leaf. The book is navy leather for a heavier, quality feel, and the gold leaf is debossed into the cover. This cover reflects the themes of wealth and extravagance found in the book.
I used a drop cap and italic title to reflect the luxury feel of the hardcover design. I also used a design element from the cover as a glyph over the chapter title. While remaining easy to read, I went with a more refined serif font to create a sense of tradition.
Sketches:
Before I began designing, I planned out some options by sketching out my ideas. I used these sketches to inform the digital designs.
