For the Redux Project I had to create three icons for a household store using household cookware as inspiration. I conducted extensive research to find suitable kitchenware items that would make strong and visually appealing icons. I used a grid system to create a range of alignment options between text and imagery. The resulting icons are likely to represent important aspects of household store, such as cooking, dining, or kitchen organization. The project demonstrates the skills in conducting research and designing graphics, which are essential for creating visually appealing icons that enhance the overall branding of the store.
I chose to create icons inspired by a kettle, cooking shears, and a mallet. These choices have strong representation across departments like kitchenware, tools, and gardening. To ensure accurate rendering, I photographed the kettle, cooking shears, and mallet in black and white, allowing me to focus on the graphic elements without color distractions. I captured various perspectives of each tool to determine the best options for rendering. Using grid paper, I sketched the tools in three different formats: a fully saturated version to test modularity, a version emphasizing tonal values, and a hybrid version combining the first two. This approach enabled me to explore different rending possibilities and identify the most effective design.
Once I determined the best perspective for each tool and created sketches on grid paper, I transferred the sketches onto Illustrator to create one graphic for each tool. The graphics were created in both 5" x 5" and 1" x 1" dimensions to ensure that they would hold up at both sizes without losing any important details. This attention to detail is likely to result in high-quality and effective icons that will effectively represent the household store.
During this process I began to explore color and font studies to create a harmonious flow between the icons and typography. Specifically, different color schemes, such as complimentary, triadic, and analogous colors, to find a color palette that will effectively represent the household store. The goal is to create a color scheme that is visually appealing and harmonious with the chosen icons, as well as stay on brand with the household store.
