I did an illustration for the NY Times as a student project. I first explored a way to visually express the severe environmental pollution of the earth due to the vast amount of landfills. I also thought that the earth was getting heavier and heavier due to garbage, and this idea connected me to Atlas in Greek mythology, who struggles to hold the earth with both arms. The challenge was how to indicate successfully the fact that only a small percentage of people are consistently involved in protecting the planet’s environment. Thus, I used dramatic lighting effects and a few heavy colors to represent Earth and the space-like stage to create a scene where Atlas seriously struggles with the garbage alone.
