SPECULO
CLIENT: The Southern Centre Christchurch – a multi-sensory environment aimed at those who may have physical or mental disabilities.

SPECULO is a multi-sensory product that manipulates and distorts one’s reflection at the user’s control. It stimulates sense of sight, changing what is normally seen, to something of wonder.
The three reflective blocks are different shaped rectangles – regular, concave and convex. The rotation of these blocks alters the user’s reflection and perception of their face. LED lights and velcro attachments are included to further stimulate sight and allow portability.
Versatility is implemented through different placement orientations, different types of blocks, and different light options – as a key factor taken into consideration is that everyone has different sensory needs.
Designed and made as part of a Product Design, University of Canterbury group project in collaboration with Ella Kortegast, Matthew McCarty and Hunter Sharp (2021).
