A Letter to my Siblings - by William Keeley

Aidan, Kaitlyn, Bridie, Chase, and Reid,

I hope I was a good older brother,
Forgot the cold-shoulder and provided warm comfort.
I know we have different fathers or mothers,
But you’re all my blood and I love you like no other.

I always tried to do my best to visit,
But after I left for college you grew up and I kind of missed it.
Life as an only child was simple, but I’d rather dismiss it,
Because the thought of your smiles makes my life worth living.

Thank you for all that you have taught me,
I learned from you before you even started talking.
I learned you need to crawl before you can start walking,
you inspired me to try harder no matter what it cost me.

I ask that you look up to me but learn from my mistakes,
And always know that you do have what it takes.
I know life is hard work and full of headaches,
But with time even the smallest of puddles become the greatest of lakes.

I will always try to protect you from the dark and the monsters,
But even schools are full of evil I know how they are between the lockers.
The most important thing is to love yourself and you won’t be conquered,
By a bully’s harmful words and hurtful names that they can conjure.

And Mom’s right honesty is the best policy,
I remember one time I lied about school and it followed me.
Admit it when you’re wrong and fix it with an apology,
I know this from experience this isn’t just a prophecy.

I know now you’re too young to understand this,
I mean so am I, along with half the things on this planet.
Life is hectic and there is no way that you can plan it,
You just have to be able to work through all the damage.

I can’t wait to grow old and celebrate,
Even though when Reid turns 21, I’ll turn 38.
Just be happy to know whatever is on your plate,
will get dealt with together, as a family, and that’s what’s great.
