HIRAYA: A Hope for the Homeless
Port Area, Manila, Metro Manila
Collaborative 2021
Metro Manila has grown exponentially due to rapid urbanization of people from the countryside seeking for work opportunities. BASECO is one of the largest informal settlements in the Metro Manila. A former shipyard located at the mouth of Pasig River with an estimated 17,000 informal settlement families (ISF) and estimated 85,000 residents with 100% no legal tenure of land.
The project emphasizes a holistic design approach which gives importance to the local livelihood and utilizes existing materials and innovation through innovative modular shipping containers readily available onsite. The idea is to create a "community block"- a housing made of multiple blocks that is interconnected to each other; where one block must consist all the needs of a neighborhood (house, livelihood, park) to allow easy access to basic community needs. The solution does not only gives a 'housing' design but is also critical to the local community needs, culture, and livelihood aiming to give a "home" for the residents; a hope for the homeless.
