Portrait of a crying man
Hey guys! This is my first successful attempt in adopting visual techniques to improve my watercolor painting that I'd like to share with you all.

So far, I've been trying to understand the below:

Color theory - knowing which colors create the color that you're looking for
Underpainting - knowing which undertone to use before you apply the base layer
Skin tone mapping - knowing which color combinations to use on the forehead, eyes, nose, cheeks, lips, and jaw.
Brushwork - knowing how to smudge properly & use cauliflowers and back runs to your advantage

So yeah, it really mostly about colors. I think it makes sense considering I've been exclusively doing B&W sketches for the longest time.

I don't have a fine liner brush at the moment but I think the rugged feel of the pencil strokes fits well with the overall look that I'm vying for. I also used an actual eyeliner pencil to elevate the teary-eyed effect (as well as the white parts hehe)!
Fig 1: Initial sketch using mechanical pencil
Fig 2. color palette using Prang oval watercolor paint set
I also mapped out all the colors that I was going to use before I started painting. It was really helpful since you won't have to overthink which mixes you'll need to apply while you're waiting for the paint to dry. (trust me it gets overwhelming when you're only working with an 8-color set 😰)

Anyways, constructive feedback is much appreciated! 💖
