ARMCHAIRS Is Home Still Possible?
Armchairs are the most basic item in which the daily life of house flows, the resting points of guests and family members, the neighborhoods where conversations and silences are shared in the house. We don't even think about seats as this daily life flows, they are just there. They do not create a special landscape inside the house, but are embedded in the background of the house landscape. Although it is possible to define migration in many ways, we can perhaps define it as the disintegration of a house in relation to the house. Everything that once constituted the space called home is gathered, gathered, animated, and some spill over into a space whose boundaries and future are uncertain. This is the saddest acquaintance of people's migration. They have fallen out of use, t hey are now sunk into an eerie solitude. So, what do the armchairs, which form a part of our home with us, mean when we are not at home, when we migrate, when we leave the house or when we have to leave, what are they good for? Now they are not part of the rarely noticeable backdrop of a home's background. They are looking for a place to settle, hanging around in the streets, on the edges of the garbage, on the bottomof the walls, sometimes in a meaningless void. They come before the landscapes they occupy for the first time, stepping out into the light, seeking attention, and trying to tell us what they once were. Sometimes, it is as if they are trying to sink into the background again, they want to be an element of the landscape again, and to find new guests with their inviting stance. But most of all, they take on the silent witness of what has passed away. By standing still, they portray th at purgatory where the migrant is stuck between being settled and not being settled. Just as a migrant can find a mansion rather than a house in the place where he or she goes, armchairs are questio ning the possibility of the house instead of creating the house in these landscapes. This is the immigrant's question: is a home still possible?
