Subculture Editorial Spread

Subculture Editorial Spread
This third-year project was about using only typography, format and whitespace to construct an editorial spread. An integral part of this project was to follow typography rules with precision. You can only break a rule if you fully understand it.

I used the South African zef culture as a topic for my editorial spread. I carefully considered the type and format to compliment the topic, for instance the alphabet in the background to create the effect of a leopard print.
Typography rules I broke:
Rule 1: Avoid breaking grids.
Rule 2: Refrain from using more than two typefaces in your design.
Rule 3: The average drop cap size is two lines.
Rule 4: Hyphenation should be turned on when justifying text.
I discovered this project to be quite captivating since I have an affinity for the zef subculture, and exploring the various typographic principles was equally intriguing. The restriction on using photographs or vector graphics also served as a test for my layout design abilities, adding an extra layer of challenge to the process.
