League of Legends 'Cordels'

Illustration and layout design of 'cordel' booklets to be distributed at the final of the Brazilian League of Legends Championship 2023 (CBLOL 2023).

Briefing
Santander Bank, as a sponsor of the event, was planning a brand activation, and for this purpose, they envisioned an activation booth. The booth would feature branding visuals of the event, along with standards and distribution of the booklets. I was hired to create the standards and booklets. In the booklets, I was supposed to create 4 representations of the League of Legends heroes, Jhin, Katarina, Poppy, and Trundle, in characteristic woodcut-style illustrations. Cordel booklets traditionally have a woodcut-style illustration printed on the cover. The standards were to be inspired by those used by the carnival groups in Recife and Olinda wich are cities well-known for their vibrant carnival festivals in Brazil.
What is a 'cordel'

'Cordel' are booklets containing popular poems, displayed for sale hanging on strings or cords, which gave rise to the name. Cordel poems are written in rhyme, and some are illustrated with woodcuts. The stories found in 'cordel' are part of popular culture and, in general, blend humor and irony with a critical approach to issues in everyday life and popular culture.
The event

The Brazilian League of Legends Championship (commonly abbreviated as "CBLOL") is the main competition for the electronic game League of Legends in Brazil, administered by its developer, Riot Games. In the year 2023, the championship final took place in the city of Recife. It is a grand event with opening shows and during the breaks. The decisive showdown takes place in a best-of-five format (BO5) and is broadcast live.
The characters

The League of Legends champions chosen by the client to be featured in the brochures were: Jhin, Katarina, Poppy, and Trundle.
The cordel booklets

Illustrated by me and with texts written by Tito França, the booklets tell funny stories involving each of the chosen characters, with language adapted to the gaming world.

Carnival standard

A carnival standard is a flag, usually rectangular in shape, made of fabric supported by a horizontal rod called a "travessa" and a vertical one called a "varão," intricately designed and embroidered, representing allegories and symbols of the carnival groups.
Our standards

It was created 5 standards, each representing a player's position in the match. In each of the banners, the symbol stands out prominently in the central part, with shapes and ornaments on the sides that typically adorn the traditional banners of the carnival blocks in Olinda and Recife.
