BioSynth - Editfest 2023

I created a title sequence for a fictional netflix sci-fi thriller inspired by biomimicry.

The synopsis

In the not-so-distant future, humanity has pushed the boundaries of science and technology to new heights. A brilliant scientist, Dr. Elena Torres, stumbles upon a groundbreaking discovery in the field of biomimicry - the ability to replicate and integrate the incredible abilities of Earth's most extraordinary creatures into human DNA. As she unveils this breakthrough to the world, a powerful and shadowy organization, known only as "The Consortium," seeks to control this newfound power for their nefarious purposes.
Dr. Torres finds herself at the center of a dangerous game, racing against time to protect her research and ensure that humanity uses this newfound knowledge for the betterment of society, rather than its destruction. She must gather a team of scientists, hackers, and unlikely allies to thwart The Consortium's sinister plans and unlock the true potential of biomimicry before it's too late.
The process

In order to create the edit, I like to source the music first. It was important that the soundtrack was serious, dramatic and had a sense of urgency to it.
The soundtrack then determined how much footage I needed to source from Filmsupply’s library.
I searched for clips that reference the plot, biomimicry, symmetry before selecting ones that allowed for successful match cuts.

With the proposed director being Denis Villeneuve, a black and white colour palette made sense.

The treatment of the titles themselves was inspired by DNA strands. Each character has a rotation offset, which also alludes to plot twists throughout the series.
