Elevator Notice & Wayfinding Signage

Elevator Notice & Wayfinding Signage

Elevators have become an enticing adventure for some of the younger visitors in the Children's Building at Spring Creek Church. With the church's continuous growth, ensuring elevator safety and efficient usage became increasingly important.

This design project aimed to create signage that not only discouraged unsupervised children from playing on the elevators, but also informed visitors that elevators were primarily meant for parents with strollers and volunteers.

Additional wayfinding signage was also proposed to help direct visitors to check-in kiosks and stairs leading up to the K-5th grade classrooms more efficiently. While the welcome desk volunteers are readily available to answer questions and guide foot traffic, the foyer experiences congestion during peak times due to the increased flow of visitors.

Project Goals

Enhance Safety: Our main goal was to make sure everyone remained safe by discouraging children from playing on the elevators, thus reducing potential risks.

Clarify Messaging: We wanted to make sure our message was crystal clear. The phrase 'No children on the elevator' was overly restrictive and not technically accurate, so we clarified by saying 'No unsupervised children allowed on the elevator.'

Kid-Friendly Artwork: We aimed to make our signage appealing to children by adding custom, colorful, kid-friendly artwork that would help convey the message visually.

Design Approach

To meet our project objectives, we took the following design approach:

Revised Message: We updated the sign's message to explicitly state 'No unsupervised children allowed on the elevator' to ensure everyone understood the rules.

Improved Communication: We combined text and artwork to communicate the message effectively to both children and adults, making sure everyone understood the elevator's intended use by parents with strollers and volunteers.

Custom Art: Instead of using traditional stick figures, we opted for silhouettes of people to provide a more relatable and context-rich visual element for children. Custom vector art was created to best illustrate the message. The bright green and orange colors, which are in line with KidsCreek brand guidelines, were applied in bold blocks for optimal visibility.

Wayfinding Signage: Two larger signs (24x36) were created to preemptively respond to the 2 most common questions asked by new visitors:
(1) Where are the Kiosks to check in?
(2) Where are the K-5th grade rooms?
Outcome

The notice posted by the to the elevator button by the doors successfully addressed the church's safety concerns and clarified elevator usage policies. With the custom artwork and revised wording for clarity, the signage not only discourages unsupervised children from using the elevators, but also helps visitors understand the intended use of the elevators by parents with strollers and volunteers. The pictographs can also be understood by young children who are mobile, but not yet able to read. Wayfinding signs may be considered for use during holiday seasons and early fall when the need peeks.

This project highlights how effective design can contribute to the safety and functionality of a space while being approachable and kid-friendly. These design are a valuable addition to my portfolio, showcasing my skills in combining clear messaging with engaging custom-made visual elements to solve real-world design challenges.
